Polish migrants send billions home, says report

( 05 / November / 2009 )

Over the past five years, Polish immigrants working abroad have earned a total sum of €125 billion. Out of this sum, almost a sixth was sent to the country.

"Poland is one of the largest exporters of labor in the world and the largest one in Europe," said Andrzej Jasieniecki, deputy president of Euro-Tax. According to the latest report from Euro-Tax, the average wage of Poles working abroad amounted to €15,200 annually which translates into €1,300 per month.

According to the Central Statistical Office (GUS), there were 2.2 million Poles working abroad last year, which is more than twice as many as in 2004, when Poland joined the EU.

"The pay expectations of a majority of immigrants, not only from Poland, are not high. This is their main competitive advantage on the labor market," said Maciej Bukowski, the head of the Institute for Structural Research.
