Wood Group Gas Turbine Services has 2800 employees at bases in 10 countries. The businesses provide maintenance, repair and overhaul services to operators of gas turbines, steam turbines, generators, other high-speed rotating equipment, and associated accessories and components.
In 2004, the company commissioned Alpha to identify a range of potential suppliers capable of manufacturing a range of components for the fuel systems of aircraft turbines. In particular the company wished to identify suppliers capable of producing a range of stainless steel and metal alloy components using CNC lathes, CNC machining centres, CNC / NC EDM (spark erosion) machines, vacuum brazing, plasma coating and titanium ARC welding.
Alpha supported the Wood Group initiative by:
identifying and visiting a number suppliers meeting the technical requirements.
obtaining priced quotations against company drawings and specifications.
making recommendations for outsourcing of specific component groups to identified companies
recommending the next steps, both technical and commercial, for developing long term sourcing relationships with the selected companies.
Further, Alpha was commissioned to research the gas turbine overhaul business in Czech Republic, and undertook substantial additional research to assess the current situation under the following headings:
Qualifications & experience of technical graduates
Air traffic frequencies
Potential locations of repair, overhaul and maintenance hubs
Establishment of a possible maintenance base
Operating costs of a regional overhaul facility
The information provided by Alpha was used by Wood Group management to develop the company’s regional strategy for the coming years.
