Scholarships for science students

( 14 / May / 2008 )

Civil engineering, electrical engineering and machine building ranked top in the Top 10 Fields of Study considered detrimental to the future of Polish economy.

Other key fields on the list, prepared by the Minister of Higher Education Ms. Barbara Kudrycka, include environmental engineering, power engineering, mechanics and machine-tool, automatics and robotics, mathematics, biomedical engineering, and mechanical and electronics engineering.

To satisfy the growing demand for specialist in these areas, the government plans to boost the youths’ interest in science. Students who opt for science are to be granted an additional monthly scholarship worth 1000 PLN starting from the first semester. According to Dziennik daily, even colleges offering programmes within the top-ten fields may count on financial support.

According to Dziennik, the pilot project is to take off in the 2008 academic year and the expected number of students concerned would be around three thousand. Granting the scholarship to future students will be based on their performance at the final secondary school leaving exam, while the support for academic centres will be decided through an open competition.

The Ministry of Science and Higher Education claims that to satisfy the need for developing new technologies, special attention will be paid to the innovative aspects of the curricula. The Deputy Minister of Science, Grażyna Prawelska-Skrzypek, stated that the competition should open second half of May.

Dziennik reports that 30 key fields of study will have been chosen by 2013 attracting an estimated number of twenty one thousand students, primarily entering science and engineering courses. In the following five years, the Ministry of Science plans to allocate over 1 billion PLN to this purpose.
