Tolerant as Poles

( 17 / March / 2005 )

According to the European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia, Poles are the most tolerant nation in Europe. Poland has one of the lowest index regarding resistance to multicultural society and the lowest in case of opposition to granting full citizenship rights to legal immigrants.

It appears in the report that the resistance to multicultural society in Poland is lower than in France, Germany or the UK. Only one out of fifteen Poles is against granting citizenship rights to legal immigrants. None of the EU member states is so tolerant towards foreigners. There is more evidence of Polish tolerance in the report. Only 30% of Poles believe that there should be restrictions to the impact of foreign civilizations on their own.

The report is a strong evidence against the prejudice of intolerance of the Polish society. The research shows that the highest level of resistance towards immigrants is visible among uneducated people, inhabitants or rural areas and elderly people.

Intolerance is more common in countries with high unemployment rate and those of low level of economic development. It is not the case in Poland: despite the fact that Poland is one of the poorest countries in the EU, it is also one of the most tolerant.
