Polish companies are giants of the region
( 26 / January / 2005 )
PKN Orlen opens the list of 1,000 largest companies from countries that entered the EU in 2004. Among top 20 companies there are 8 Polish firms. Except for PKN Orlen the top positions are occupied by telecom TP SA, insurer PZU and the National Grid (PSE).
The ranking published by the Czech Press Agency has been prepared by CEC (Central European Capital) and CEKIA (Czech Capital Information Agency). The ranking was based on revenues of companies in the Central and Eastern Europe.
The accession of ten CEE countries to the European Union on 1 May 2004 has turned the attention of international society on the economies of these countries. In 2003 there were 54 companies in the CEE with annual revenues exceeding EUR 1 billion. The largest company, oil producer PKN Orlen, achieved total revenues of EUR 7.668 billion.
The ranking includes all new member states except for Malta and Cyprus, which have very small and specific economies. In total 792 companies originating from the eight new members of the European Union had total revenues of EUR 100 billion in 2003. Unsurprisingly, Polish companies represented 44% of the total number of enterprises included on the list, followed by Hungary and the Czech Republic.
