Poles on Titan
( 14 / January / 2005 )
Today at 13.34 of Warsaw time the tester of European Space Agency - HUYGENS landed on the surface of the biggest moon of Saturn - Tytan. The gauge of the tester was created in Poland.
The tester reached the target of its journey on the board of American spacecraft - CASSINI.
The device which allowed to measure the temperature and heat conductivity of Tytan as well as atmosphere composition was projected by Polish scientists from the Centre for Space Research of Polish Academy of Sciences.
"The gauge worked. The temperature on Tytan, which is minus 179 degrees, appeared to be very close to what was anticipated (minus 180 degrees)" - emphasized Krzysztof Ziółkowski from Centre for Space Research of Polish Academy of Sciences.
“The invitation to participate in such prestigious international undertaking, which is the CASSINI/HUYGENS project, confirms the appreciation of past achievements of Poland in space research” – said prof. Zbigniew Kłos – the Director of Centre for Space Research of Polish Academy of Sciences.
According to many scientists, there might be similar conditions on Tytan as there were on Earth 3 billion years ago. Under thick layer of ice, there might be water and living organisms.
