Academy of Science report shows Hungary's performance in EU is midfield in region

( 25 / May / 2006 )

Budapest, May 25 (MTI) - Hungary's performance in the European Union was in fourth place among the eight new members from Central-Eastern Europe, a report prepared by the Hungarian Academy of Science shows.

The report shows that during the first 12 months of EU membership Slovenia's performance was best, followed by the Czech Republic, Lithuania and Hungary, the director of the Hungarian Academy of Science's World Economics Research Institute Andras Inotai said on Wednesday.

The report only compares the eight countries with each other and it rates them on the basis of an index, 50 percent of which is made up of economic performance, 25 percent of which is political and social stability and 25 percent of which is operation as an EU member, research leader Krisztina Vida said. If economic performance were the sole indicator, Hungary would be fifth, but if political and social stability had been the only indicator, Hungary would be second following Slovenia, she added.
