Investment in environment tops CZK 20.2bn last year

Investment into environmental protection exceeded CZK 20.2bn in the Czech Republic last year, an increase of CZK 335m against 2007, according to data of the Czech Statistical Office (CSU) released Thursday.

The biggest amount of money, namely over CZK 7.5bn, was given to wastewater treatment.

The amount of non-investment costs topped CZK 46.2bn last year, down by CZK 3.5bn on the year.

Corporations invested more than CZK 14.6bn into environment, public sector invested over CZK 5.5bn.

Investment went mainly to Stredocesky region (CZK 3.4bn), Moravskoslezsky region (CZK 2.4bn) and Jihomoravsky region (CZK 2.3bn).

The investment into air and climate protection totalled CZK 3.8bn against almost CZK 6 bn a year ago. Investments into waste management totalled CZK 4bn, up by CZK 700m year-on-year.

The amount of money given to the protection of soil and subterranean and surface waters rose from CZK 2.2bn to CZK 2.7bn last year.

By contrast, investment into anti-noise and anti-vibration measures decreased from CZK 1.2bn to CZK 1bn last year. A total of CZK 341m, a drop of CZK 22m against a year ago, was invested into protection of species last year.

The amount of ecological investment was nearly six times higher last year compared with the period before 1989. However, it was half of the record CZK 40.5bn given in 1997.

Nearly two-thirds of the non-investment costs, such as wages, energy and rents, were given to waste management and over CZK 8bn was given to wastewater treatment.

Sales from services for the protection of the environment amounted to CZK 30bn and sales from related products totalled CZK 10.6bn. Savings from repeated usage of related products reached CZK 2.8bn, statisticians said.
