Caledonian Alloys Ltd.

Caledonian Alloys Ltd is a company specialising in the recycling and processing of superalloys of nickel, cobalt and titanium from castings producers and manufacturers involved in machining operations. They support the aerospace, automotive and energy sectors.

The Company has plants in the US, Scotland and the Far East which are required to service the manufacturing facilities of its major customers. One of these customers established a significant and growing business in the Czech Republic, requiring Caledonian Alloys to follow suit.

In late 2002, Caledonian Alloys had secured a factory location in Kladno, Czech Republic, to locate a shredder and other equipment used to reduce the bulk of swarf, produced in the machining operations of its customer. The factory was also to become the centre for the receipt of swarf and the transportation of the reduced bulk metal to the UK and US for cleaning and reprocessing.

However, Caledonian Alloys did not have the local capability to set up the necessary legal entity to operate in the Czech Republic. The Company, therefore, appointed Alpha to manage these aspects for them.

Alpha supported this investment project in a number of ways including:

  • Establishing Caledonian Alloys s.r.o.

  • Acting as Jednatel (Chief Executive) until a permant staff member was appointed

  • Obtaining Trade Licenses and necessary Operating Permissions

  • Preparing project management processes, detailed project plans and progress controls

  • Managing the recruitment of the first employees

  • Arranging bank accounts, bookkeeping and payroll services

  • Providing the translation, interpretation, administration needs of the project

In the spring of 2003, Caledonian Alloys s.r.o. commenced operations successfully in Kladno with the minimum management input from its parent in the UK. The company would not have been able to service its existing customer ecomomically from their base in the Scotland.

Key factors in Caledonian Alloys‘ success in this project are the lower labour costs in Kladno, the recruitment of a reliable highly qualified Czech manager as Jednatel, the proximity of the new factory to its major client and the available support from local Authorities and from the range of Alpha contacts.
